The question is, after removing the squirrels and chipmunks from the Rodentia order, is there anything awwww-worthy left? This order includes not only mice and rats but groundhogs (A.K.A. whistlepigs), prairie dogs, beavers, muskrats, and porcupine among others. The name Rodentia comes from the Latin rodere, meaning to gnaw. This is a fitting name since scientists have defined this order of animals based on having incisors that continue to grow their entire lives and need daily use and grinding lest they take on a saber-toothed appearance. However, I define them as being super cute and cuddly. There are more than 200 species of rodents in North America accounting for 60% of land animal species on the continent.
