There are two species of avocet present in Montana (both only in the summer): the American avocet and the black-necked stilt. Despite being 20 inches tall and having a wingspan of 30 inches, American avocets weigh less than a pound. The American avocet chicks are never fed by their parents—they find their own food from birth. In lieu of a picture of the black-necked stilt (yet), we have included two pictures of the American avocet below.
